The process of crafting palm frond products begins when the artisan carefully selects green or dry fronds. Then, a journey of diligence and skill begins with drying the fronds in the sun for several days, making them pliable and easy to shape. Next, the fronds are cut into equal strips known as "khous," which are then cleaned and smoothed using simple tools like a "minqash" (a type of tweezer) and a "sim" (a type of wire). The following stage involves the weaving or braiding process, considered the artistic step that transforms the khous into a finished product such as a basket, a woven mat, a fan, or a woven rug. The strips are arranged and stretched according to a precise pattern, and sometimes plant-based colors are added to enhance the piece's beauty. Thread or fiber is then used to join the sections, while the artisan continues their meticulous work with unwavering skill.
